Hey there,
I just joined this forum and im hopping you guys can help me out here. I have SOME knowledge (meaning not enough) about car audio systems. Im putting together a list of what i want in my system and the first thing i need to figure out is what kind of subs i need. I dont have MUCH trunk space to spare, so no huge boxes. Maybe 4ft x 16in x 2ft. Now that i think about it, it sounds like enough. BUT i want to salvage as much trunk space as i can. So i was thinking about bazooka tubes. Are these a good investment? If so, what kinds of brands should i be looking at? If not, what sub+box should i get for my system?
P.S. I dont want it to be SOO loud that you can hear it a 1/2 mile away, just enough bass to make all genres of music sound good.
THANKS A BUNCH!!

First off, what all do you need? Such as amp/sub/front speakers/cd player/etc..
Second, what is your budget? What do you want to spend for whatever you need for your car?

I have front speakers, i need an amp too. I have a deck that will do the job as well. Budget wise, no more than 600 for the whole "shabang".

12W6v2
PG Xenon 600.1
That should put you right around $600 and sound phenomenal. An Alpine MRP-650 would work great with the W6v2 and only runs $190 at Ikesound (putting you at just over $500 for the sub and amp).
Image Dynamics IDQ 12" sub at Cardomain (authorized/with 1 year factory warranty) for $140. Only needs about 1 ft³ sealed (actually, you'll be fine in a prefab .85 ft³ sealed enclosure). Amp...um, IDQ is crazy efficient. You could get by just fine with a PG Xenon 400.1 from Ikesound for $160.

SUB:A single 12W3v2 should be perfectly fine for what you want $199shipped

I also suggest the IDQ that luvdeftonz already mentioned.
AMP: This Orion HCCA-D600 would power it fine
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=16572 $249shipped
Also This Alpine will give plenty of head room if you get the 4 ohm version of the sub rather than the 2 i linked you to
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=14927 $258shipped
Just one more amp to consider: this PPI would put 500 watts(if u get the 2 ohm sub)
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=13699 $269 shipped
as for a box, you would want to talk to JD at soundsthatpound.com about building you one. A sealed box made of 3/4 MDF is what you are going to want, and shouldn't run you too much. Just e mail him with the info on what you are looking for with the Sub's specs and he can give you a price quote, shouldnt be much more than 100-150 shipped for a box like that
As for the head unit, I will always recomend an Alpine first, I'm a bit biased in that department, and rightfully so... they're about the best bang for the buck:
On a budget, i would say this would do the trick:
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=14776 $156shipped
Wiring kit for the amp: http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=12893 $36.99
This all puts you slightly over your $600 budget. The IDQ would be a slightly cheaper option, also, as much as I hate to recomend the most overused over praised sub in the universe...The Alpine Type-R is also a great sub for the money. To go a little lower even in price and get good performance, the eD 13Kv2 would be a great choice for a sub that will give you great sound quality on a budget.
all together, not including wiring
