1 or 2 x12"

I have a decent 2x250rms 12" subs. I'm wondering if maxing out (like 200+rms) ONE sub would have better sound (ie: louder) than having both going. Right now, they are in a kinda large ported dual chamber box.

I had 2 12" MTX Blue Thunders with 125 RMS each in my car a while back. I sold one of them and hooked up the other so it had 300 RMS (maximum wattage). It sounded as good or even better than when both of them were running. Plus, it took up half as much space.
