Found a sub - looking for an amp and other information
Hello,
I apologize in advance if I'm not very technical in this area, I'm just starting to get into the car audio scene. I've been interested in getting some subs in my car for quite some time now, after a bit of research I think I'm going to go get these subs. http://signature.crutchfield.com/s_5....html?tp=27905 Here's a quick part about their stats: Rockford Fosgate P3L-2X10 Punch P3 Dual Subs 4ohm total impedence 2x 10" subs 200-800W RMS 1600W Peak Power Sensitivity: 89dB I honestly do not know if the wiring is in parallel or serial, I'd assume parallel here but crutchfield fails to specify that. I'm looking for an amp that's around 600-800W for this. Most of the amps say they're 1000W at 1ohm, and it seems all of the amps that are 600W at 4ohm are extremely expensive (>= $1000). Maybe I'm just not sure what I'm looking for. Also, is 800W a good amount of wattage for a car sub? Is it enough to "shake the car next to you?" Thanks in advance, -Matt |

Did you buy those from crutchfield for $509? Also (most) amps are rated at doing their total rms on 14.4 volts of power. If you got a 1000 rms x 1 at 1 ohm, you voltage may drop a little and so it won't do all of the 1000. I'd say a good 1000 rms amp would be fine for your subs if they can hold 800 rms. It is important to set the gain correctly on the amp when you install it though so the voltage going to the subs is not too high.

Thanks for the reply.
Nah, I haven't purchased them yet. I'm trying to get everything in order before I do any purchasing. Anyway, maybe I'm confused about how this works, I thought that the wattage drastically goes down per added ohm. Like, say I was to order this amp: http://signature.crutchfield.com/s_1...All=Y&tp=27743 It's 1000W at 1ohm, 700W at 2ohm, and 400W at 4ohm. I'm only using half the sub's power at that point, right (since the subs are 4ohm)? Thanks, -Matt |

damn that amplifier is expensive...
as for the impedance question, i'm assuming they have 2 dual 4 ohm speakers and have them wired in series/parallel presenting a 4 ohm load. http://mobile.jlaudio.com/support_pages.php?page_id=161 |

So the subs have an overall 4ohm resistance? Should I be looking for subs wired in parallel / parallel compared to series / parallel?
What hardware would you recommend instead? I'm looking for something like an 800W RMS sub with a 1000W RMS amp. I'm too cheap to go anything higher than that. |

Sorry to double post, would this sub be any good? http://www.crutchfield.com/p_2067DCV...02.html?tp=112
# ported hatchback-style enclosure with two 10" CompVR subwoofers # 3/4" medium density fiberboard construction covered with gray carpet # 2-ohm total impedance # power handling: 50-800 watts RMS (1,600 watts peak power) # frequency response: 25-500 Hz # sensitivity: 97 dB They've got a 12" one for $50 bucks more, is it worth the $50 for the extra 2 inches? What do you get out of the bigger speakers? |

There are some great subs and amplifiers on the market, but I wouldn't be excited about those you have linked to. Are you able to build your own enclosure? What is your total budget? (if it's close to the products in your 1st link, that's enough for a pair of much better subs and a good amp to run them).
Depending on what's important to you (loudness or accurate sound, large enclosure or small) I would look into a pair of raw subs, an amp and then build an enclosure to spec for them rather than go with a pre-fab solution. Look at brands like Fi, Image Dynamics, Alpine, SSA, Sundown, Audioque for other subwoofer options. Look at brands like Cadence, Alpine, Sundown, Audioque for amplifiers- the one you choose will depend on what impedance the two woofer versions present. |

Hey,
I really don't want to go any higher than $800 at the moment. I really don't think I'd have the time or the knowledge to build an enclosure, which is why I'm looking at the already enclosed subs. So the Kicker's aren't a good deal then? They're like exactly the same as the rockford's just significantly cheaper. I still haven't found an amp yet (that one I found earlier was just a random pick from a list of them), but thats for later. -Matt |

You haven't stated whether you want a sealed sub enclosure or have the extra room a ported version requires, but $800 would buy a pair of Fi Q 12" subs and an Audioque 1200D amplifier, leaving wiggle room for having a proper enclosure made to suit them. This combo would walk all over the RF and Kicker subs in terms of sound quality and should still get plenty loud. You could also get a Cadence or Sundown amplifier as all three will outperform a JVC Arsenal one
. Depending on what your goals are, $800 should allow for much better products than you linked to.https://ssl.perfora.net/www.ficaraud...dex.shopscript http://www.audioque.com/aq/index.htm http://www.cadencestore.com/ProductC...?idCategory=96 http://www.sundownaudio.com/index.ph...mplifiers.html Try sending member Jason Paul a PM for a discounted good amplifier- he runs Powermax electronics and usually has good pricing. http://www.powermaxelectronics.com/products/pc/home.asp |
