I ordered from parts express the dayton 5.25" woofers and vifa 3/4" poly dome tweet (each was under 15 bux) for my surround sound. Not only do they have insane SQ, but i can crank a peak of 105 Db of mid/tweet sound out of them! (measured on 5.1 dolby digital @ -12 on my pioneer reveiver on resident evil when the axe hit the glass, among other measurements).
Anybody else give these puppies a try?

Well, I need some good sounding... but inexpensive (read: expendible) speakers to use as test dummies... because I'm going to start playing around with DIY amplifiers... and if something isn't quite right when I power it up, it might not exactly be good for the speakers... :p
Have you tried using these on their own, as mains?
Rear satellites really don't (or at least shouldn't) do very much... they are purpose-built ambiance after all...
How do they stand on their own?

That Vifa tweeter is used in some rather well thought out control monitors by Tannoy...the 6.5's
Also, vandersteen used them in their "4000 dollar" speakers a few years back.
One caveat about that tweeter. You may be experiencing a rather good sized dip around 3K with that combo. That tweeter likes to be crossed over above 5K@ 12db/Oct and will burn out rapidly if crossed much below that. It has a "silvery" or "shiney" quality sound that gives a great deal of realism to cymbals and tamborines as well. A very good tweeter for the money...and when and if you bake it, replacement do it yourself voice coil/dome assemblys are ready available. Due to our hearing haveing a rather large "peak" in the 2 to 4K area, having a dip there is not a bad thing and lets you hear more definition than a speaker that shouts at those frequencies....hitting the peak of our hearing response which drownds out or "masks" many articulate sounds.
Yepper, building is always better than buying in the sub 2000 dollar range and a heck of a lot more fun. I usually with that tweeter add at least some inductance to one leg of it in the form of a 1/2 ohm resistor to cut back on the shine some.

I built some MTMs with 2 of the dayton 6.5's and the dayton tweeter, spent around $90 for everything, they sound as good as, if not better than $400 speakers, they have excellent prescence, very detailed, I really like them

well, for example of response. With this setup, in stereo w/ the .5 cubed tuned 40Hz, the response is actualy better than my cars. My car has a set of HiFonics Zeus 6.5" component set with my Audiobahn dual 30 band EQ and single 12" Zeus tuned 25Hz, tuned with my RTA. The bass response when full pass to the tower speakers is AMAZING. we watched American History X with just the stereo and no sub. A car drives by bumpin, and you can hear and feel the bass. High end on the same movie, a cash register is thrown through a window and the sound of the glass blew me away. Ive never heard such an accurate example of glass breaking :D. Music, i played 311's Love Song (ok, the cures song, but 311s mix) and it sounded beautiful. The vocals, bass guitar, drums, everythign went together so well. I cranked it up and even at high volumes (over 95 db im guessing, ill meter it today if i get time), its clean and undistorted.
I replaced the .5 ported box with .26 (? i think, somewhere around there) sealed. Once again, amazing sounding. The midrange of the speaker is just perfect. The bass response wasnt as good as the ported, but it still played fairly low.
As for the full surround sound effect, i havnt found a person that said that i couldnt beat your average theater in both SPL and SQ :D hehehe.
So yeah, all together, VERY VERY satisfied.
AS for Xover on the tweets, 3K seems to do well enough for me, but ill consider moving it up more, especialy since they recommend at least 3500.
here are the links to the speakers

Any other Qs id be glad to answere. but when it comes to the money i spent VS quality of the setup, there is no doubt that it is definatly worth every penny.
