a viper is not hard to burn
lets assume it is just a straight viper
they run like 13's on radial tires
and the big bad ACR runs low 12's on radials

what I am trying to say..
is vipers are almost all show.. and no go..
ya they are fast compared to the average vehicle
but what average vehicle costs 80-120 grand

it is not hard to get any car to run in 11's
all it takes is money

For the $2,000 for the civic + $98,000 in mods no **** that thing will be fast.

Yeah but who says he spent 100K on that thing?

Hard to say what that Civic had added to it, not really a good video. But I'd have to say, headers, intake, cat-back and a turbo if the b16a engine was in there.
That's like $4000 worth of mods for it.

plus did ya'll hear the way he was driving the viper?? clearly he has no skills what so ever. i mean he was shifting slower than my grandma.

Of course he had no skills. People who buy top-end cars are usually horrible drivers. Anyone else seen that video of the Porsche 911 GT3 vs the Skyline on the strip? The one where the Porsche driver has it in reverse right off the line. Morons with too much money.

viper will do 1/4 mile in 12.5 seconds. haha vipers are all show and now go its funny they go 191. there is a new modle viper that is coming out or came out that has 600+horse power and will go in the low 200s I heard 220-230. to say viper is almost all show and no go rid in on.

that was sick....

but it makes me beg the answer to this question...wtf is the v10 good for then....other than having a helluvallota torque...and getting u to instant death speeds....i thought all that displacement was for getting down the 1/4 mile quickly????

isnt that what all the muscle car guru's pledge...????

a vipor gtsr would do better but there mostly top end.
why dont they start the race at 100 mph, then see who wins

it is all show man..
i see vipers get stomped on all the time
by many different vehicles
the viper is a dog in the 1/4 mile man

I have seen hondas
classic chevy camaros and novas
mopar cuda's, charges, roadrunners
ford stangs

new vettes, camaros/firebirds, mustangs
pretty much any vehicle that can hold a decent v8
or turbo'd v6 can be made to easily destroy a viper on the strip

but of course we are talking non-stock vs stock...

but common all kinds of stock muscle cars eat a viper up in the 1/4 mils
yenko novas
any high end mustang
all kinds of mopars, dusters/demons, chargers/superbirds, cudas
any of these cars can run sub 12's with nothing changed but the rear tires with street legal cheater slicks

have you guys ever picked up a DuPont Registry magazine? People who can afford vipers can afford to trick them out. There is a HUGE aftermarket following for vipers. I'd love to see a modded up viper on the track. The GTS can go to 70mph in first gear for god's sake. That thing's a 0-60 dream car. Ever driven one? I have. If you want to hear some torque stories, i've got some to tell.

I havn't clicked that link yet...
But Motor Trend recently clocked the latest Hennesey 800 viper with the quickest 0-60 time EVER measured...

It was something like 2.76 seconds! I think it was last month's Motor Trend, the time was listed on the front cover, over the title...
How can ANYTHING compete with that?

Now if you are going dollar-for-dollar, and spent $10K on a used Civic and spent the rest of the $90K on mods, of course you might get CLOSE...
But wouldn't you basically be building a car from scratch anyways? You almost wouldn't have any advantage even starting with anything! It would hardly be fair to say it was a "civic" that beat the thing, no, it was a full custom tube chassis drag car that beat it...
And it wouldn't be front wheel drive, not for a drag racer that had to beat 0-60 in 2.7 seconds!

I am all for building Civics (I have one!) that run respectable quarter mile times, but drag racing isn't it's strength, mostly due to it's FWD drivetrain, on the line the rear squats, the front lifts... Advantage RWD...
So I can hardly buy that any FWD Civic would EVER beat a Viper like that one... Unless the Viper was automatic and driven by a girl... I mean, you could modify the Civic so that it was COMPETITIVE with the viper, but by nature that you have a FWD disadvantage, you would end up making the motor SO MUCH MORE capable than the Viper's to overcome that disadvantage, you would be talking about something like an 800 HP Civic! And you would have to stuff huge slicks UP FRONT!
It has been done (Steph Papadakis, etc.), but only by the import drag racing Elite!

Anyways, I would take a 95 Viper if it had a 4-banger in it and went 0-60 in 10 seconds... It is just a damn cool looking car with a damn cool interior.. with the widest ce
I would just cruise in my too-cool looking roadster looking obnoxiously at the Vette next to me with a look that said "I don't need to race you, this is a Viper..." Pulling away like I had time from the light...
No one would need to know! :D

PS.. I just watched the Video, the guy with the Civic got the holeshot, he took off right from the line, the guy with the Viper couldn't have hammered it, because you would have seen one hellofalot of wheelspin, and the Viper would definitely have advantage off the line...
If the race were fair, and the Civic really was legitimately faster, you would have seen the Viper jump out front right off the line, then the Civic would have passed it somewhere down the quarter mile...
Definitely some girl in the Viper... I smell a "fix"...

I just got the video too

what buffoon is driving that beautiful viper? look how slow he was off the line? WTF? That car is the fastest thing i've ever seen at the get-go. Also, there would have been some smoking tires if they really got on it. That race was utter BS

definitly, the viper is a faster and better handling car, they start at 72,000 not 80,000 and they are coming out with a new one in 03, no "civic" is going to beat a viper in real life, especially since when you buy a viper you are given a class on how to drive it. the only dissadvantage the viper had is that it has a 6 speed tranny, with a first gear that doesn't end untill about 60 mph, and even with that there is no way it could loose. Plus a civic that had enough power to go that fast had to have at least 90,000 dumped into it, you don't gain 8 seconds in the quarter mile be simply adding a turbo. it's hard just to drop one whole second.

The Viper's torque and awesome first gear are what would dominate! 70MPH in first gear! I've done that myself! It's amazingly fast!

jeffdahms69
07-16-2001, 07:41 PM
if the viper had it's 6 speed tranny and it topped out at 150 it would be untouchable by any STOCK car or heavily modified civic, even though it still is untouchable by civics at 190. if you have the same torque and horse power but shorter gears you will go quarter mile quicker.

I don't buy the 6-speed-as-a-handicap theory...
That transmission isn't a poor design by any means, tall or not.
That car is a musclecar, plain and simple, and it was designed to accellerate like you had the force of god behind you...

THAT Viper in the video didn't even have wheelspin, it was like the driver said "I will race you starting in 2nd gear, how's that for a handicap?" That might even have been the real story...

Stock Viper vs. internationally known FWD import dragster... That might be a race! But Viper vs. Joe Compact Car... sorry Joe, I am sure you made a good effort, respectible car given what mods you have, but $80,000 talks...

and I can vouch for the Viper's ability to get off the line that quick in 2nd gear. something I didnt consider.

woah woah woah, i'm not saying the viper's 6 speed is a bad thing or a handicap, i'm saying if it had smaller gears it would get up and go even quicker thats it. i love the viper. beautiful car, great enginering, so far it's the only dodge "different" product that i've seen that is truely good.

I don't even think that...

From what I know about Vipers, even thought they come stock with just about the widest tires you can buy in back (I would hate to replace those!), if you make any signifigant mods to the HP of the car, you WILL have trouble planting that energy to the ground... It already has so much HP!
Having a tighter gearset or raising the final drive would just give you even more wheelspin problems...

In fact, an often tossed around quote amongst the Viper crowd is:
"If you own a Viper, and haven't spun it, you are either lying, or haven't driven it hard."
And that just doesn't happen if the gear ratios are too wide, or final drive is too short...

Personally, I can't imagine being able to control that power driving a stock, entry level, first generation Viper! (Of course, I have never driven one... My wife and I tried to rent one for our vacation this fall, but somehow ended up renting a Daewoo... Don't know what went wrong there... Last time I leave my wife in charge...;))
I think this race was just fixed!
