Stock Windstar Amp Location?
Hi. im new. after researching, i found this site to be the best place to ask my question.
anywho, to start things off im currently planning building a carpc (or carputer as some people like to call it) for my '96 Windstar (btw, im a regular over at mp3car.com) and other than power requirements, one thing that has bothered me is the audio. from the beginning i knew any sound card would never have enough "oomph" to power even stock speakers in a vehicle. so my original impression was that i would have to go out and buy a new amp just to get any audio. but between of a lucky ebay find and a few google searches i have foud that the windstar's and many other ford vehicles come with stock amp's which are seperate from the headunit's. now from what i was reading, in the windstar its located behind the glovebox. i just looked earlier today and albeit i didnt take it out completely, i didnt see anyhing resembling the pictures ive seen of the amp. does anyone have any assurance that this van has a stock amp and if so, where is it located exactly? thx

Not all Windstars are equipped with stock amps. In fact, even some with the word "premium" stamped on the door panel don't have factory amps.
If you pull the factory head unit, you'll find two or three plugs at the back. If there are a gray and a black plug, both the same size, you have no factory amp. If there is a large gray plug and one or two smaller square plugs, then there is a factory amp, which should be behind the glove box. |

if the radio has an orange stripe on, i believe it's the power button, upper left hand switch on radio it has an amp. you need not find the amp to utilize it though you can tie in to it using harness kit form metra. all the wiring can be done behind the hu.

yeah. i understand the part about not needing to find the amp. ive been doing some thorough google searching and have found the wiring harness i need for this application. i just wanted to make sure that this van actually had the stock amp. and i do believe the power button has the orange stripe on it although its not the "premium" stereo from what pictures ive seen (its just got the fast forward and rewind buttons to the right of the tape deck whereas the premium stereo has 4 buttons iirc).
anyways, thanks for your guys help. i will be getting myself the removal tool within the next couple days and will pull out the stereo to see if it is using the correct harness or not.

well, i FINALLY got the removal tools today and checked the headunit. unfortunately, its not one that has the seperate amp (afaik). on this page, its the first one listed.
still, its not too bad. between of removing the radio altogether and finding the OEM amp on ebay for $cheap$, the situation aint too bad. |
